Sound symbolism shapes the English language: The maluma/takete effect in English nouns

چکیده

Sound symbolism refers to associations between language sounds (i.e., phonemes) and perceptual and/or semantic features. One example is the maluma/takete effect: an association certain phonemes (e.g., /m/, /u/) roundness, others /k/, /ɪ/) spikiness. While this has been demonstrated in laboratory tasks with nonword stimuli, its presence existing spoken unknown. Here we examined whether effect attested English, across a broad sample of words. Best–worst judgments from 171 university students were used quantify shape 1,757 objects, spiky round. We then words predicted objects which they refer. found evidence that associated roundness are more common referring round spikiness objects. This represents instance iconicity, thus nonarbitrariness, human language.
